Here is a list of questions that are similar to the written questions on the final exam. They are meant to serve as a way to focus your studies on the important concepts of the 12ubio program.
Study your notes and text broadly for the objective type questions. (multiple choice, T/F, etc)

METABOLIC PROCESSES

Draw and label the following bond types, covalent, polar covalent, ionic, ester, peptide

Describe the biological characteristics of carbohydrqates / lipids / proteins.

List some lipids that you might find in your kitchen.

What are the characteristics of water and describe several aspects of its importance to biological systems.

What are the various types of atmospheric problems generated by human manufacture and use of hydrocarbons including the hydrogenated hydrocarbons.

Be able to draw and or identify a variety of hydrocarbons , carbohydrates, lipids, proteins.

Know the IUPAC nomenclature for hydrocarbons so that you can id molecular models.

List the characteristics of enzymes explain how they function as well as how they are regulated and how do poisons disable an enzyme?

Outline the major events of glycolyis and Kreb's cycle in terms of ATP production and flow of energy.

Outline the major events of photosynthesis such as the Light and Dark reactions and cyclic photophosphorylation and what each event evolved to produce.

Various scientists pioneered what is now know as photosynthesis theory choose one and describe the significance of their research.

Homeostasis

Draw and label the Islets of Langerhan and explain what hormones are secreted and how they  regulate carbohydrate homeostasis within the human body.

Draw and label the parts of the Nephron and explain what physiological  function they  perform to  homeostatically regulate water balance (osmoregulation) and urine formation  within the human body.
What is the importance of the hormone ADH and what endocrine gland produces and secretes it?

Draw and label the parts of the "typical" neuron and explain what role each part plays in the excitable tissue function. Show the normal direction of an action potential moving along the neuron.

Draw and label the typical pictorial image of the excitable tissue membrane and explain how each part is used to generate a resting potential and how an action potential is generated.

Where is the thyroid gland , what hormone does it secrete, what are the target tissues in the body, other gland has control over it , and what role does it play in homeostasis

The body is made of organ systems composed of 4 basic types of tissue list and describe the role of these tissues.

 GENETICS

Describe the various ways that a mutation can be formed in a cell.

Discuss the ethics of human genetic engineering and what you think the future holds for this technology.

Pick your favorite genetic science pioneer and describe what they discovered and its lasting effect on the science of genetic studies.

Describe the function of the lac operon using a fully labeled diagram.

List the major steps and the biochemical components involved in the process of protein synthesis.  Use a diagram to aid in your explanation.

Describe using a labeled diagram and point form the overall structure  of DNA.

 Populations

Discuss the following topics in terms of population dynamics.

> monocultures pros and cons, island effects on speciation, an example of an ecoinvader and its effects on its new ecosystem or general trends in human demographics and the challenges that will be presented in the near future.

> Describe and discuss the origins and impact of SARS on the population of Canadians.

 > Discuss the natural science and  population dynamics of the Zebra Mussel ecoinvasion in Ontario.

 > Describe and discuss any type of parasite and its relationship to the host it lives in on or with.

> The capture mark recapture method of estimating wild populations is based upon some dubious suppositions, explain some of the real considerations that must be considered while evaluating the validity of the final results

 EVOLUTION

Discuss one of the following issues in evolutionary terms

a -  an example of allopatric speciation

b - an example of any type of speciation

c - why sexual selection occurs giving a real example

d - the observations that  punctuated-equilibrium actually occurs

Define the Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium and what it tells biologists about the mechanism of natural selection.

Discuss the theory of evolution through natural selection and mutation using  a good example such as Peppered moths, Darwin's Finches, or plant evolution.

Discuss the nature of intuition, a hypothesis, a theory facts and beliefs.

Darwin waited 40 years before announcing his theory of evolution to the Royal Society of London. Why did he wait so long what aspects of  Western cultural and science  were threatened by this radical and hugely significant scientific theory?
