Malaria : the Nobel Prize awaits

Malaria is caused by one of four species of Plasmodium (falciparum, vivax, malariae and ovale) parasites. P. falciparum is the most virulrnt and lethal being estimated to cause 200 million clinical cases, and 1-3 million deaths (including many children) every year world-wide in.

This tragic parasitic disease is endemic to most tropical and subtropical countries most which are listed as third world or developing economies. Malaria was more prevalent but has been eradicated in most of N.A. Europe Australia and New Zealand.

Malaria is a blood borne disease vectored to the host via Anopholes mosquitoes (hence need for nearby watery environment)

Malaria is considered to be an emerging disease as global climate change, economic migration, environmental degradation, and constantly mutating Plasmodia favour increased infection rates.

LIFE CYCLE OF THE PLASMODIUM

Where populations of mosquitoes are eliminated cases of malaria plummet. Recently in Vietnam mosquito eating copepods have been released into community water sources and drastic reductions in infection have resulted as mosquitoes are eliminated!!
