away!
if you aquire an FTP with your web space you can hook it into DreamWeaver and manage your site from DreamWeaver (as the pros do)
below is only nice to know
Students planning to go into the digital arts in any form are
advised to start their own professional web portfolio
with your own personal web address such as
www.michaelsharris.com
Presently about 30% of grade 12 students host their own domains!
Many students at college and university programmes in the arts, design, media, advertizing, communications etc are expected to start their own web portfolios as
a modern career launching/networking tool.
I highly recommend the above web provider 1and1.com its a great hosting
company and I have had 99.99% up time in 10 years. Ranked # 1 by WIRED
Magazine.
a) sign
up and save your username and password!
save your username and
password!
In WordPad (NotePad) and then to H drive.
save your username and
password!
save your username and
password!
(so many students forget their username and password)
SEND YOUR NEW URL TO YOUR TEAHCER
( harrismailbox@gmail.com ) please
include your full name in the email

b) use the web browser to upload
files from your "H" drive
c) remember to save to your JUMP drive
in a text file as well
d) your files are the assets you
generate while learning....... keep all
your files in a safe place
- successful Communications Technology students often take
home their work in
progress as a file on their jump drive
or as an attachment on an email to themselves to work at home
- I recommend Gmail ..... great interface for webmail and lots of space over 3Gb
e) Finally remember that at the end of the semester your work
will be presented in an online portfolio so it is
very important to keep all your files organized as you proceed through the
course.
You might want to build your portfolio as you go.
If you believe nothing is free you are
probably right! Free web space on the Internet is a part of a
business plan by web hosting companies to get your future business which is fair
enough. What usually happens is that you are given a certain amount of web space
and then you proceed to fill it up. You then have to purchase more space to
continue your growing web presence. If you are really unlucky you are told after
a time that your web space is going to cut in half by a certain time in the near
future.......... nothing is free .
So what is the alternative?
Bite the bullet and get your own domain name and pay for web space!
a) pay for your own domain name with one of the above listed companies or
.......
b) register your own domain name (such as
www.michaelsharris.com)
with a web hosting company such as
>
1and1.com this is the company that I presently use for
www.michaelsharris.com
$3.99/month 100 Gig space!
for this you will get .....
- 1 domain name
- 100 GB web space
- 500 e-mail accounts
- 250 GB traffic
The
advantages of registering your own domain name are:
> you will own a personal domain name
> you will have numerous email address options
> your web presence will not be interrupted by the fickle nature of some
business plan/failure
> you will have a secure web presence (imagine having to transfer a large
website to a new host all the links will be broken!!!!)
> you will appear more professional
> you will be able to use server scripts such as , CGI, PERL,
Cold Fusion
and other goodies that you probably are not familiar with but often are used for
some of the more nifty web tricks like counters, forms, web commerce, animations,
etc. (these scripts have to be installed on the server that you use)
Once you have registered and own a domain name (URL) it is
yours for life as long as you pay yearly fees $ 5
(like a car license).
You can transfer your domain name to a different host company when ever you
like.
